In this blog entry, I’ve decided to explain which MBTI types like certain movie genres, and I’ve also tried to explain why. I’ve done this after writing many blogs trying to characterize characters into MBTI types, as you can see from my Hunger Games, Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of The Ring blog entries.
Alright, here we go, if your behind in your film watching, then this may be useful as a guide! Please remember that I had to put each type with one category, which was hard to do since some categories suit many different types and vice versa!
Action/Adventure: ESTP’s- (Se Ti) living in the moment, get bored easily, want to see some fast moving scenes! Less focused on the personal side of things, more focused on what can be seen. (James Bond and Indiana Jones)
Horror: ISTP’s- (Ti Ne) ISTP’s love facing the unknown, and love to experience things that will challenge their minds. They are also a type that is likely to be able to sit through many horror movies in a row, and progress onto darker and darker themes. (Nightmare on Elm Street, The Conjuring and The Exorcist)
Western: ESTJ’s- (Te Si) they love the power hierarchy/confrontations that come with these types of films. They just watching the main character overcome their struggles usually as well, and imagining themselves in the same situation. (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and any spaghetti Westerns)
Crime: ENTJ’s- (Te Ni) much like ESTJ’s, they enjoy these power confrontations as well. Movies such as the Godfather allow them to see how smart people outsmart other smart people, and they like watching the structured world of crime unfold. (The Godfather, Reservoir Dogs and Goodfellas)
Fantasy: INFP (Fi Ne) INFP’s love the internal world, a world where anything is possible, and what makes them enjoy fantasy slightly more than J’s is their ability to allow implausible things to slide/increased enjoyment in spontaneous moments (Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of The Rings)
Sci-Fi: INTP (Ti Ne) Much like INFP’s, however since they prefer the facts over the fiction, it is no surprise they prefer that their movies make more logical sense- hence they are more likely to enjoy Sci-fi films! They also enjoy the endless possibilities about the future with their Ne (Star Wars, The Hunger Games and Back To The Future)
Comedy: ENTP (Ne Ti) They enjoy the witty jokes, the creative dialogue, and the way most comedy movies create a unique outlook on our way of life. (American Pie and The Hangover)
Romantic Comedies: ESFP (Se Fi) Combining the emotional romantic moments with the funny moments of comedy films, romantic comedies are perfects for ESFP’s. (When Harry Met Sally, 50 First Dates and 1000’s of Chick Flicks)
Musicals: ESFJ (Fe Si) Most ESFJ’s can appreciate the emotion and the effort in the production involved in musicals. (Grease, Sweeney Todd and Mamma Mia!)
Thriller: INTJ (Ni Te) Most Ni types enjoy being tested for their curiosity and enjoy trying to predict the ending, trying to outsmart the screenwriter! The Ni paranoia also plays a big part! (The Sixth Sense, Inception and Memento)
Romance: ENFJ (Fe Ni) ENFJ’s appreciate the emotional depth and symbolism in romance films. You might find an ENFJ crying next time you watch one of these films 😉 (Titanic and The Notebook)
Drama: INFJ (Ni Fe) Like ENFJ’s, INFJ’s love films that play with the audience’s emotions. However, they will be more likely to focus for longer viewing sessions and appreciate the depth and complexity in some of the 3 hour dramas 😛 (The Shawshank Redemption, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Schlinder’s List)
Animated Films: ENFP (Ne Fi) I really think only ENFP’s can truly appreciate animated films because they have the imagination to create such films, how spontaneous the films are and the emotional element of them. (Toy Story, Shrek and A Bug’s Life)
So at this point, it’s hard to find a category for the last three… But bear with me…
Mystery: ISFJ (Si Fe) No type prefers a mystery to be solved more than the ISFJ. They want things to be normal and structured, hence they enjoy watching how this happens in mystery films as it takes them out of what they are used to. The excitement comes from the mystery of not knowing why things are the way they are. (The Butterfly Effect and The Usual Suspects)
War: ISTJ (Si Te) ISTJ’s appreciate the realism and the nobility of certain characters, as well as the scenery and the attention to detail in war films. (Saving Private Ryan and Apocalypse Now) 
Family: ISFP (Fi Se) ISFP’s can appreciate the fun mood of a family movie (Se) mixed with the good morals present for their Fi
There you have it, the movie genres for each MBTI type!

As an INTP, I actually like Fantasy more than Sci-Fi. Why? Sci-Fi often uses fake science and has more plot holes, in my opinion. Fantasy tends to abide by the rules its universe creates.
My favorite genre is probably mystery. I’m always making connections, and I make a goal of figuring out the mystery before the detective (or consulting detective) figures it out.
Interesting, I asked 2 INTP’s for this blog, one said fantasy one said sci-fi. That’s interesting, do you usually figure the mysteries out?
Yes. I usually have to watch them by myself, otherwise I annoy the other people watching. Thankfully my husband doesn’t mind, so we watch them together and come up with theories. Castle is one of my favorite shows because I solve mysteries as a writer would.
Do you watch many thriller films as well? I know that that there is a lot of connecting the dots/theories when watching those types of films too.

Don’t like them. I think it’s because they are too much of a sensory overload for me. Shaky cam! Chase scenes! Peril!
I got a headache watching the Matt Damon Bourne movies, and was physically exhausted after seeing Cloverfield.
I think it has to do with the style of filmmaking. Not sure if they could be considered thrillers, but I really enjoy John Q and Jurassic Park, and those have a lot of suspense, too.
I don’t think that theorizing makes up a lot of the viewing experience of thrillers. Isn’t the whole point of a thriller to be shocking?
Haha, when I was thinking of thrillers I was thinking about the ones that mess your mind up and then make you confused and exhausted through all the twists, turns and exciting scenes. I was thinking more psychological thrillers, seems your thinking more action thrillers. Those are really shocking! I was thinking Sixth Sense thriller/horror. That’s a movie N types will be freaked by. But I guess Jurassic Park/Bourne would appeal to S types.. I rambled a bit, what do you think?
And I agree I liked the 1st Bourne movie, after that I got a headache… that shakiness was ridiculous!

INTJ here. Don’t like thrillers, so somewhat surprised at that connection. My favorite movie type would be hard science fiction, if such a thing existed. So I’d have to go with tech talks, if that qualifies as movie genre.

As an Intp I agree, I mean, i love sci-fi, but fantasy and thrillers are way more interesting for me, you feel like you have more possibilities to explore and create.

As an INTJ I approve of this comment. But it seems the article describes a ‘thriller’ as being based on a more intelligent script with unexpected plot twists and unknown endings. Those aspects are indeed interesting but not exclusive to thrillers.
I’m an INFP and definitely like fantasies, but I also like comedies, horrors, and thrillers. One fantasy movie I didn’t really enjoy was Lord of the Rings because I tend to fall asleep while watching it. I’ve tried to watch it, but halfway through the scenery of the green valley, I doze off. I wake up when it gets to the war scene when the movie is almost done.
Yeah, Lord of The Rings trilogy. I personally tried watching but I didn’t like it. I rewatched it later and enjoyed it more the second time 🙂

I too am INFP and you literally just went in my head LOL! That is so freakin’ scary!!! I always fall asleep in that moment of Lord of The RIngs and I too love horrors, comedies, and thrillers!!!
ISFj here. I’m into mystery, horror and thriller, but I mostly like them for the psychological implications. Dark psychological conditions, trauma, alienation and so on are my thing.
I think th Mystery would fit better the INTJ, they would solve the mystery before the movie ends ;). Like I said, I prefer this genre for its twisted atmosphere.

I think mystery could fit INTJ too- it could really fit a few types- INTP love coming up with bizarre theories, INTJ’s love predicting. 🙂

Yeah, since INTP’s and ENFP’s both have Ne, as well as other types such as INFP and ENTP, you may be find you relate to the movies of those types as well 🙂
I don’t know why ENFPs is associated with animated movies even though I like Finding Nemo etc .As a ENFP, I like Bergman,Kubrick and Kim ki duk stuff along with Mystery and Thrillers,any good movies from different part of the world.
True. In a way, ENFP was labelled as animation just because by process of elimination, some type had to fit with animation, and most of the others had already been assigned to another genre 😛

Speaking as an ENTP,I find that I gravitate to genres such as horror,thriller,drama,with the exception of Sci-fi,on occasion. I am familiar with both “The Hangover” and “American Pie” and either was hardly satisfying,I confess.Crude and juvenile. I do have a few films under the “romantic comedy” genre included in my list of favorite films,however.I guess,when it comes to comedy,I can be a bit picky >.< lol

I have actually classified some of these before, and that’s a great idea of putting all the superheroes/villains into one blog entry. I usually classify the Joker as an ENTP and Lex Luthor as an INTJ. Batman has got to be an INTJ 🙂
True, my ENTP daughter can enjoy The Hangover type movies with her ESTP husband, but she’d rather watch Monty Python, Space Balls or The Princess Bride (which her husband hates). She also likes epic historical/fantasy (VikingsbGame of Thrones) and random things like paranormal/conspiracy theory thrillers. Comics were her favorite as a kid “Marvel Heroes and DC villains.”
Im just reading this but as also an ENTP i much rather perfer horror, drama and few romantic films although some comedies are ok i’d stick with horror mainly.
ENTP. Nothing is more entertaining than a good absurd comedy. It’s funny how I start to analyze emerging patterns in order to incorporate them in my mind. American Pie and such ones are not great examples. Naked Gun trilogy is ENTPness through and through. It is shame how rare good comedies really are these days. Yeah, I chose comedies that were at the top of the box office because I thought people who hadn’t watched movies like Naked Gun trilogy would be more likely to identify with American Pie… it doesn’t mean that’s the type of comedies ENTP’s enjoy, of course! 😛

I know I’m really late (a few years), but…
ISFJ here. I have an INTJ friend whose favorite movie is The Prestige; he tends to like Christopher Nolan movies.
My personal favorite is Inception, because it utilizes the concept of dreams in a way that is hard to wrap your head around but is also emotionally riveting and has a great soundtrack. (Actually, Interstellar is way more heart-wrenching, but I still prefer Inception.) I also enjoy animations, some comedy (but don’t watch much), and some action/adventure movies (e.g. MCU movies). These aren’t movies to be watched in theaters, but I also love those Nature documentaries. Funnily enough I’m not as fond of documentaries with actual people.
Oh, I neglected to mention that I do enjoy mysteries. I like watching a variety of murder mysteries on PBS, and some police procedural/crime drama TV shows. But in terms of movies… maybe not as much as other genres.
I`m INTJ. I don`t like thillers so much, but I truly like fantasy and sci-fi. For those more artistic INTJ fantasy is their world. For those who take pleasure in exact sciences sci-fi is their field. My favorite movie is The Lord of The Rings. TV series – Star Trek(1969). If I don`t have what I like best I will gladly see any movie with action, doesn`t matter in which world the plot was setted. But I detest social films, romances and romantic comedies.
Yeah Someone, the great thing is that the N/S have a big role in the favourite types of movies, so I would definitely recommend looking into that. P/S don’t. And yeah INTJ/thriller seems to be the one off genre! People seem happy with the other ones, so if you have a better genre that hasn’t already been taken, let me know!
You’re dead on with the INFJ loving drama. I watch all kinds of melodramatic things and love them — often, if a movie has some demented twist, I’ll love it even more since it plays with emotions. But I also cross over into the other genres a lot — I watch fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, and a little horror (love NBC’s Hannibal and all the psychological manipulations of it).
My dad is an ENFP and he loves pretty much every genre — strangely, he likes bio-dramas and historical stuff, where I tend to shy away from the sadder stuff. He bought a 16 hour documentary on WWII history that he keeps trying to convince me to watch — but two episodes in, I had to quit out of indignation that as lately as the 90’s, some of the people who sent their neighbors off to the death camps because they “didn’t like them” still had no remorse — even knowing what happened to them. 😛
Your dad loves bio dramas as an ENFP? Knowing that an ENFP is soo open minded, I’m not that surprised by any genre they would like, but this is surprising to hear! But of course, when it comes down to it, MBTI isn’t exact, so there are gonna be ISTP’s who love romance, etc. when it comes down to it!
And yeah as I said before the intuitive function is most importance, hence why you love a lot of those other genres- as an INFJ myself, I like all the genres you described, they sound like introverted genres to me. What movies specifically do you enjoy? 🙂
I was fairly sure until last night that my dad is an ENFP. Then he did something that made me wonder if he’s an ENTP. (Both of them tend to be troll-ish, and he’s very “big kid, having fun all the time” — but I can’t decide if he’s Fe or Fi. Sigh.)
My last sort-of-boyfriend was an ISTP. I don’t think he watched much romance, but he had a romantic heart buried under all the over-analyzing.
Let’s see… movies. My favorite movies change around a bit, but I always come back to loving Gladiator, The Godfather, The Lord of the Rings, The Pirates of the Carribean (first one — I hate what they did with Norrington later), Gone With the Wind, the new Star Trek, and Titanic (mostly for the ship, though — I find Rose totally selfish and irritating). As you can see — a lot of major drama there, along with a bit of the fantastical in places. 😀
yeah it is often hard to tell… you know back when i first learnt about mbti… i thought my dad was an entp… he did the test about a year later when i was convinced he was an esfj… guess what his result was…. isfj lol so i was off by all four letters.

The Godfather/Titanic/LOTR/Gladiator are the ones I love from that list… I’ve seen all the ones you listed but I don’t like the others! If you like those type of movies, obviously Harry Potter, Star Wars, and The Hunger Games come to mind 🙂
My dad is totally into this stuff, but he’s waiting for me to figure it out and tell Mom, so she can organize it into a system he can easily understand — I’m the INFJ, she’s the INTJ who can execute and simplify like nobody’s business. I’m stuck on him, because he seems like an introvert but an introvert would have trouble starting his own business — and my dad did. He’s self-employed, but totally disorganized (not a J). He’s a big picture person (Ne) that then analyzes how to make his plans work out. He seems to take things personally sometimes, and be totally withdrawn and analytical at other times — we went to a meeting the other day in which someone we know was skewered, and I was really upset and he was semi-upset, but already figuring out how to “fix it” and discredit those involved. So I really am stuck between ENTP/ENFP on this one. I’m leaning ENTP now. I’ll have to read more about the type and see.

I LOVE Harry Potter. Love. Love. Love. But the books really are better than the movies! I’m not a huge Star Wars fan, mostly because I didn’t grow up on it, so by the time I got around to seeing it as a teenager, I was over-analyzing it and pointing out its flaws. The Hunger Games and I have an … interesting relationship. I am disturbed by those books/movies on every level, but simultaneously fascinated by people’s outright adoration for them. I’m obsessed with trying to figure out WHY they like them so well.
I love Harry Potter too, and I think the whole appeal of the Hunger Games is the survival element as you see on reality TV shows combined with the dystopian setting that is becoming really popular in a lot of literature. This appeal made a successful book series, and with such a huge book fanbase they were able to produce a high budget successful film. IMO
And Clarity I love your thought process on analyzing your dad. It’s so hard to get it right! Yeah there are a lot of considerations between deciding between Ti/Fi. It really comes down to, when in a tough situation, does he focus on the problem/or the people. That is, is he objective or subjective in dealing with people- getting his emotions involved or keeping them out
I have a hard time getting into all this dystopian fiction. It’s just not my thing, but I love speculative fiction so go figure. 😛

And yeah I think the dystopian fiction thing seems like more of a trend right now than anything- often randomly a dystopian setting will be introduced that adds nothing to the plot. What’s speculative fiction?
Yeah another thing is when you relate with your dad do you feel emotionally close with him? If you asked him for advice about something would he give you the nice answer (F) or the honest answer? (T) Because a lot of my friends are XNFP or XNTP and I definitely notice a big difference between the two. I find I can talk about people more with the NFP’s, and hobbies/TV shows/stuff like that with NTP’s.
Speculative fiction is where it’s set in our world, but with fantastical elements — witches, vampires, werewolves, explanations for history that never really happened and are fantasy-esue, that sort of thing.
I… rarely feel emotionally close with anyone, but want everyone to be happy and treat each other nice, so I must be one of the coldest INFJs on the planet. I thought Dad was an ENTP until last night when he told me something that I’m convinced a person with Fe would never do — so now I’m back to ENFP. LOL But yes, he is very caring. I go to him with all my problems and he helps me with them. He also has the infamous ENFP temper — Fi-Te explosions, but then he gets over it fast.
Just remember though with your dad in typing him- being an ENTP (although you say he’s an ENFP) if he was an ENTP, it should mean he makes slightly colder decisions usually as Ti is his second function- even though he has Fe as his third function. He definitely sounds like an ENFP in my books, but of course I really have no say in this! It’s really up to you to decide 🙂 What are your friends MBTI’s?
Speculative fiction sounds intriguing. The explanations for history that never happened sounds particularly interesting, do you have any examples?
I do think he’s an ENFP. He has the typical blow-ups that I’ve heard are common with Fi-Te types. 😀
My friends — my best friend is an ISFJ (we get along fairly well, but can really annoy one another sometimes), and her younger sister, who I’m also friends with, is an INFP. I know a girl who is also an INFJ.
Um… Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, where the north wins the war against the vampires by using silver bullets. There’s also a book series in which the South won the American Civil War. The new “Sleepy Hollow” on Fox is speculative fiction. I enjoy it a lot. 🙂
Ha oh god those blow-ups are interesting. I sometimes had those which makes me question whether I have Fi rather than Fe, but that was when I was younger. Have you seen TJ types have those blow-ups? They are often far more explosive and more interesting haha
That’s interesting that your best friend is an ISFJ. I have a close ISFJ friend as well. My best friends are all N types though. I seem to get along better with P types, other than INFJ’s that I rarely meet who I seem to get along with best. Like you! 😛 What types do you get along with best?

TJ blow-ups are … intense, yes. I’m pretty mild-mannered most of the time, so the blow-ups around our houses cause me to do a lot of eye-rolling.
P types have the ability to drive me nuts, because they can be so scatterbrained, but I get along fairly well with my dad, who is a P (we have Ne/Ni problems, though, so we argue a bit, since he’s so much more “big picture” than I am). I seem to clash the least with ENFJ/ESFJ/ISFJ/INFJ types. I get along really well with my mom, an INTJ. (I actually thought I was an INTJ for two years, until I realized I have Fe all over the place. Heh.)
I’m sorry, I don’t know the name of the series — I never read it, a friend mentioned it to me about five years ago!
Character-based AND plot based. I will stick around a bad show if the characters are great, though, so that may lean me more toward characters. I loved “Fringe,” because it had both a decent, mind-bendy plot and terrific characters. But since I have such a low tolerance level for bad writing, I sometimes give up on things *cough*Downton Abbey*cough*
Discount anything I said about INFJs — after more research, I’ve found out I’m an INTP. I love fantasy, sci-fi, and drama, basically anything that gives me something to think about. 🙂

As an ESTP i find myself too restless to watch anything, aside from shows like, say Family Guy or The Office. You don’t have to think or process anything, they’re not trying to get emotions out of you, and its just easy cheap laughs.
I cant watch TV shows that have a a continuous plot type of thing. This style of TV often requires one to become attached to the characters and follow up every week with what happens. Its too time consuming and because im so grounded in reality i have a hard time getting involved in the fictional drama that keeps most viewers watching.
Their are times when i really enjoy shows and movies with suspense, mystery and action. I just have to be in the mood.
I despise the sci-fi heeby jeeby, nonsensical genre. This doesn’t just include the obvious stark trek, star wars and lord of things.Lost was a nightmare for me to watch and couldnt make it past the second season. Shame
I hear you on Lost. I LIKE continuous plots if they go somewhere! I like to be assured that the writers actually have a PLAN and aren’t just writing it week by week. Once I got into the second season and realized there was no plan, and there were going to be no resolutions, I quit! =P
So true! Breaking Bad is a fine example of a show that went somewhere in my opinion, it knew exactly where it was headed. I cant think of any other examples though?
I honestly can’t think of any shows that actually went somewhere. Every show creator says they have a “plan,” but it’s usually obvious they don’t!

Haha, actually come to think of it your right, plus I just remembered that George R Martin self described himself as a pantser rather than a plotter (aka doesn’t plan his stories out) and plus a lot of the storylines are unpredictable because they weren’t planned out! 😛
INFJ here. Not suprised at your choice of drama, but funnily enough I’m a fan of Action/adventure and fantasy, and sometimes animated (I’m a sucker for kids movies 😛 ) Much more enjoyable and entertaining. I’ve never really been a big fan of drama, or watched many movies in that genre (although I did throughly enjoy and loved Schindler’s list) I prefer movies like Iron man, Thor, The hunger games, X-men, GI-Joe, The avengers, harry potter, I am number four, The hobbit, Brother bear, Bolt, Tangled, How to train your dragon… I could go on forever. I would have loved Eragon, but they competely ruined the book

I’m an INTP and my favourite movies are The Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men, American Beauty etc. So mostly drama and some of the gangster/business tycoon/ENTJ stuff. I do not, however, like sci-fi or fantasy (I like movies that could happen to you, even if it is a stretch). I think within each type there are very distinct tastes when it comes to movies (and all interests in general for that matter). Despite his I think your analysis was pretty accurate.
You also have a very great taste in movies! Thanks for the feedback, yeah it’s very difficult to get a type for each genre. Nonetheless, I hope you found it an interesting read even though it wasn’t completely accurate for you.

As an ENFP, my favourite genre is actually action – thriller movies. I love movies where I am required to figure things out.
I really don’t enjoy Animation as the story line is often lacking, and I find the characters oh so irritating and clichéd. I dislike romantic comedies for that very reason.
I don’t enjoy drama where everything is terribly melodramatic and depressing, I watch movies to escape into another world. But I do enjoy dramas based on classic literature, as long as it isn’t too depressing, such as Persuasion and Anne of Green Gables.
I do love adventure and mystery. I love Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones and all those sorts of movies.
I love comedy but find so few movies make me laugh. I loved The Office series, found it most amusing, but hated The Hangover and American pie.
I really dislike War movies, I don’t enjoy violence and gore in a story and war movies just bore me, unless the storyline is gripping.
I also dislike certain action movies. I absolutely hate too much action just for action’s sake, without a storyline.

Oddly enough, I’m an INTJ and I cannot stand Thrillers. I view them the same way as I view the horror genre: entirely too much fuel for my sometimes-paranoid imagination. Those things key me up for days, even if I only catch a brief glimpse of the screen on my way through the room. My dad, an INTJ/ENTJ, does love them though, so I suppose the classification works for some.
My own preferences actually run toward animated movies and fantasy with a little bit of sci-fi on the side (and that mostly when it’s leaning hard toward fantasy itself). I’d rather watch a bunch of dragons and mages and armor-clad warriors do battle than a scared and helpless group of people face inevitable doom and destruction.
My dad, on the other hand, likes a HUGE variety of movies, but typically stays away from animation, with some exceptions.

Male INFJ, I usually don’t like war movies, but as soon it’s a submarine in it, I am very interested, so maybe I need more drama, something constricted in a film.
I also love Down Periscope, a funny submarine movie, it gives a little more drama and comedy when they’re constricted in a small room.
I prefer sci-fi/comedy/romantic/fantasy, as most of the actionfilms are mostly directed to S, and it bores me easily,they’re not complex enought.

Especially my latest favorite: Frozen! Although I also love romantic comedies and movies such as Sherlock Holmes and the Advengers and any and all Jane Austin films. I’m an INFP and I loooooooove fantasy!!!! I love fictional worlds and the amount of imagination and creativity it allows for. I prefer books though, especially when it comes to Harry Potter, a series I found much less successful in the movie version. I love Narnia and LotR too. I’m not too into sci-fi, except for Star Wars which is a fav of mine.
I love animated films too, at least if they are well-made and heart-felt. My favourites are Toy Story, Kung Fu Panda, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and The Incredibles. Pure Disney movies I often find too cheesy, not a huge musical fan.
For me it all comes down to quality rather than genre, though. The only genres I’m really uninterested in are horror and depressing movies. I’m really picky. I like action-adventure, but not if the action sequences are too long or if the characters are boring and hard to relate to. I find plot to be super important, except in slice of life stories which I’m also really fond of. I don’t mind if a story is illogical (especially in fantasy) but continuity is something I care about a lot. So I can’t get into “monster of the week” shows like Buffy or Doctor Who too much. I prefer longer story arcs. So I like Sherlock better, especially since it has fun characters and humour (I don’t like thoroughly dark stuff, I need some hope).
The Hunger Games (which someone mentioned) I like for the characters and the message of the story. The theme of conflicting morals and fighting for a better world appeals to me. I like idealistic main characters with struggles I can symphathize with, although it’s also important that they are human and flawed. I don’t know how much of this connects to my type, but I think some of it does.

With the exception of Lord of the Rings/Hobbit, I don’t particularly like fantasy movies. Most are a little too shallow/childish for my taste. I lean more towards horror movies and thrillers ; Misery, Keeping Mum, Drag Me To Hell, Prometheus et al are some of my favourites.

ENFP here and I love animated movies! My favorite at the moment is Big Hero 6. I also love sci-fi and fantasy movies like The Last Starfighter, Avatar, Star Wars/Trek, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, and Legend. They appeal to me in that it’s a way to suspend reality for just a bit and to daydream about all the different possibilities and the what’s after the movie is over, like “What are Ariel and Prince Eric going to do now? Will their kids want to go back to the ocean after learning their mother’s heritage?” Of course some people know the answer to that but I digress, fun and grand scale movies I like ( I’m excited for Jupiter Rising to come out next month) however, psychological thrillers, or movies of any psychological leaning bore me.

Believe it or not I haven’t seen any of the Hobbit films. I did like the animated version, but I’m unsure about these set of films. I mean, really? Three films? Oh! And Jupiter Ascending was amazing!!! So was Interstellar and I want to like Cloud Atlas so much, however, the sex/nudity and heavy cursing at times is enough to pass on it. But I still love the concept of the future societies.
That is very correct about INFJs and our love of dramas. I definitely get immersed in something with a lot of depth and emotion more often than a surface shallow movie. Of course, I love all movie genres, but I can very well say that Shawshank is very high on my favorites list.

I’m surprised that INFJs listed as drama and ISFJs are listed as mysteries, I’m more partial to the latter, and that is the general consensus in my INFJ group too, while the ISFJs that I know are hit and miss with mystery but most seem to adore drama for the most part.
I actually laughed when I saw “Animation” as a category. The others, I suppose, were accurate, but Animation is not a genre of film, but rather is a medium. There can be animated fantasies (i.e. Howl’s Moving Castle, Frozen), animated dramas (the Illusionist, the Secret of NIMH), animated actions (Hercules, Big Hero 6), animated sci-fi (9, Titan A.E.) even animated westerns (Spirit, Rango)!
Anyone can like animated movies, not just one personality type.
INFJ-I enjoy horror movies and psychological thrillers. Both feed my Se and Ti and represent some of the biggest thrills and shocks to the system I’ll ever voluntarily take on! I also have a deep affinity for romance movies that emphasize sychroncity, serendipity and the mystical elements of life with people.
My husband is ENTJ and yeah! his favorite movies are Godfather, Wall street and Inception, needless to say I regularly fall asleep after 30 min of watching as I m loosing the plot right since movie started and I am not attentive to details and facts as well.
I love Nymphomaniac, Schindler’s list, Twisted Seduction, Girl Interrupted, The Occupants and Beautiful Mind, don’t mind horrors as well, in general I prefer movies where you can find mystery, mentally unstable people, abusive relationship I would also like at least 2 hours discussion and thorough analysis of characters and their actions after I watched them:-)

Wow, this is amazingly accurate. I enjoy crime and thriller films immensely and especially look for films with captivating cat-and-mouse relationships. The INTPs and ESFPs in my life really do enjoy sci-fi and romantic comedies, respectively, the most. However, the ISFJs I know seem to enjoy romance more than mystery. Perhaps the romantic mystery genre (there is such a thing—Grand Hotel, anyone?) will appeal to them.

ENTP here and I do like comedies, especially witty, not slapstick. Sorry, Jim Carrey. Moreover, I like Stand Up Comedy (Pryor, Hicks, Carlin, and of course Louis CK. I had to have at least one living) However, I am also drawn a lot to Psychological Thrillers, Court Dramas and movies about Trouble Geniuses (A Beautiful Mind, Good Will Hunting, Pi)
\On another note, I would predict that ISTJ’s would be fans of War movies, my father was an ISTJ (RIP), and wouldn’t watch war movies, but that probably has a lot to do with spending 2 years in Vietnam during the war. My cousin, a female ISTJ is huge fan of Horror.
My two favorite movies of this past year was Gone Girl andThe Imitation Game. I hated Birdman; American Sniper was good; The rest of the films were only so-so. As far as Documentaries, I really liked The Internet’s Own Boy.
I am an INTP/ISTP (mostly INTP actually), I am not really into movie genres and I am usuallyconfused between different genres, but I like anime like one piece and like detective conan, i liked Harry Potter but not much.. As for the hunger games, i didn’t watch the movie, i read the books, i really liked the revolutionary/ adventurous theme of it, same with the da vinci code, i read the novel and i really enjoyed reading and analyzing it(and it may be classified as mystrey or thriller.. I am not sure) .. So i think INTP’s don’t like a certain movie genre.. I can watch whatever movie and be happy and amused (except for romance, war, family.. Such movies that have no purpose or significance)

I think it’s hilarious how spot-on your list is for ESTJ, in my experience. My ESTJ dad is OBSESSED with westerns. He’s loved them all his life, watched all the Clint Eastwood classics, and he collects old western novels in his spare time.
I’m an INFP and though I very much love fantasy and especially appreciate animation (How to Train your Dragon, Big Hero 6, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, tons of fave animated movies), my favorite genre is definitely drama. Those are the movies that usually have me thinking hours after the credits have rolled and therefore I like the most. I especially love dramas that focus on character exploration, such as The Black Swan, Blue Jasmine, Stand By Me, etc. Big fan of psychological movies. Deep, complex characters are basically a must. And the good thing with drama is that many of them incorporate fantasy or sci-fi as well; Cloud Atlas was a fantastic movie in my opinion, totally loved it, and Sense8 is actually a series but another sci-fi drama that I love.

I enjoy reading a lot of Stephen King and Cormac McCarthy type books. I love horror movies more than any other genre. I love to watch The Walking Dead and I am so happy there is now a spin-off called Fear the Walking Dead!
I’m an INFJ and I looove fantasy (including animation), because it allows for multiple interpretations. Some animated films (not Hollywood) can really get one thinking- Spirited Away, for instance (one of my favourite films). I do like drama, but I’m not partial to it. I don’t like Schindler’s List as much as LOTR, Harry Potter, Back to the Future or even Inception/Prestige. Having said that fantasy can cut across so many genres, including drama. I love Hitchcock, by the way, but can’t bear to watch Silence of the Lambs. I guess the films I love tend to be multi-layered, beautiful, and heart-warming.

As an INFJ, I totally see why you picked drama. I’m drawn to slower-paced films, especially the more obscure and offbeat ones. If there is romance and depth of emotion involved, I’m much more likely to watch it.
As an INTJ I would say a somewhat intelligent plot is most important, regardless of movie genre. Though I tend to dislike movies in general I really enjoyed V for Vendetta, Inside Man, Batman Begins (yes, the one without overhyped Joker) The Prestige and The Martian.
But I prefer watching series. The plot is deeper, there is more character development and much more thought has gone into it.
As an INFP, I do love family movies (which also include older movies) but I love cartoons, all kinds, and romance comedies. As far as the cartoons go, I don’t think you can deny the large sum of animators, storytellers and writers of children’s books there are who fall into the INFP range. So, on that note, to exclude them from that is, well, silly on your part.
I’m ENFP, and I came into this post having zero idea where I’d be assigned. I think this is because ENFPs don’t really do favourites. We like many things, and will put up with many more. For example, if I’m asked about my favourite type of music, I’ll often say I don’t like heavy metal and electronic stuff.
As for this classification, interesting. As a child, I loved horror. Partly because of the unknown, partly because of the taboo, and partly because I could torture other people with it. As an adult, people don’t feel as compelled to do things they don’t want to, and now that I can’t terrify others with it, it’s lost a lot of it’s shine. I love fantasy right now. Rich new worlds that can not exist in real life. It gives my overactive brain somewhere to go when I’ve worn out the real world. I can get behind the animation tag though. I have a freakishly unhealthy relationship with Disney movies, but not with all things Disney. I love going off to worlds where you can experience things you can’t in real life. If Snow White were to be written now, all the feminists in the world would have a collective stroke, but I still enjoy escaping to that world. That said, I won’t forgive anything, just because it’s animated. Zero interest in animated history, for example.

Cool post! 🙂 I’m an ISFJ and my favorite movies are action/adventure ones. Not to say I don’t appreciate a good mystery, but I generally like action/adventure ones better.
I’d say those generally being ESTP things is true, though. I take after my ESTP dad a lot, so it’s usually him, my ESTP brother and me who watch that stuff together. 😉
Interesting post! Let me preface this by saying that I don’t watch many movies or even TV shows. As an ISFJ, I actually prefer sci-fi and action movies to mysteries (which I do like to see solved), but I’m also a scaredy cat so that makes it a little harder to watch (murder) mysteries. My favorite movie is actually Inception, which is in the INTJ category of thrillers. (I actually do have an INTJ friend who loves Christopher Nolan movies, and his favorite is The Prestige.) I enjoy some animated films (lots of Pixar movies) and comedies as well. Fantasies may also be okay, but they’d have to be pretty well-developed, with the setting removed from modern society.
I forgot to mention… to go along with the sci-fi/more recent movies, I really enjoyed Interstellar and The Martian. I’m more drawn to movies with at least some emotional hook, as long as they’re not too dark.

As an INFJ, my favourite genre is mostly drama (since I’m a sensitive man who’s mostly interested in characters and story) but I’m not really picky about genre. When I watch films that have a different genre, I take the mindset of focusing on the characters and story (even if it’s a simple one) and apply it to other films of that same genre. This is probably the reason on why I usually watch films of EVERY genre.

I’d have to disagree with some of this typing. Not every specific type is only going to like just ONE genre, and as an ENFP I can say that for sure. I understand where you’re coming from thoigh, and I do agree with the ones you picked for the most part.
I can appreciate almost every genre. I love action/adventures a lot because of the wild unpredictablility they have. Lots of romantic comedies have a nostalgic giddiness that draws me to them. What I really love to watch are mixtures of genres and thrillers. Angst and suspense always keep me interested and I feel I can relate so much to the characters in their dire moments, and I love that. No matter what genre I want to be able to emotionally connect with the characters.
Yeah, it’s more likely to be one of INFP things. John Cassavetes’s Love Streams (1984) or Opening Night (1977), or Frank Perry’s David and Lisa (1962) are the best example for ENFP. Naturally beautiful, even to me as an INTP lol.
I found this really interesting, I must say. I can see why each MBTI may gravitate towards the particular genres you listed. However, even as an ENFP I have never had much interest in animation — I actually prefer live-action. 🙂 I really enjoy Sci-Fi, closely followed by fantasy, maybe because the unreal/out-of-this-world element really entertains my high Ne? All I know is I LOVE imagining things that aren’t real as, well, real. Yet what I love even MORE than that is if said sci-fi or fantasy show/movie deals with the underlying question of “right or wrong” depending on the situations presented, and how different people approach that question of morality differently.
I bet you would love John Cassavetes films, his 1984’s “Love Streams” about the siblings, is the best start. Or his 1980’s Gloria. Or his 1977’s Opening Night. Or another indie American film, David and Lisa (1962), or 1980s French New Wave “Mauvais Sang” (1986) about the virus outbreak called love and the main character vaccinated himself pretty good.
Oh i almost forgot to say this: That probably would be too much for you to digest (due to my INTPness with its Ne vomits lol), since these films are old, but not really old though, still undeniably relatable to ENFPs and most feely types, even myself as another INTP with usual 5w6, yet unusual 7 and 8 that usually linked to ENTX, aka unhealthy INTP lol.
I know this is an old post, but still relevant tho. You did your job pretty smoothly and accurately, and here I want to add something to INTPs, because I happen to be one of them.
INTP with their aux Ne, wants to “touch” every single thing in order to understand how things work and connected to each other, like ENTPs and INFPs. Well, I was so unsure about this thing, is it just me as a cinephile/film nerd who likes to dig every single genre and its subgenre (including the indie itself) to master the film and loves them, until I found this thing in other INTP people with their wide variety of interests as well in music, books, and everything.
So “sci-fi” is not the only our fav genre, but “one of our fav genres”, depends on their personal choices. In my case, I favoritize the crime subgenres: noir and neo noir, classic, and indie films, or something to do with “unusual, unfamiliar, lame, old, dull, harsh, emotionally uncomfortable” to average film audience. INTP auteurs like Ingmar Bergman, Woody Allen, and Robert Bresson are good examples. They show the emotional scenes/moments the ordinary people would shy away from.
Want to see a very Ne film, aka so ENTPish (due to their dom Ne)? I’d say Kung Fury (2015), Godard films (throughout 1960s, the best is La Chinoise), Fritz Lang (1920s), or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986). The first one, i bet that would baffle the non Ne people. Why, because it was released in 2015 by an ENTP auteur (director+screenwriter who knows how to film) yet so 1980s, in worn out VHS scenes with Hitler who masters karate and fight Kung Fury, played by the auteur himself. And so much 80s references, smooth puns, and Ne vomits to catch, a plain dark comedy. You’re right about ENTPs though.
And for ENFP, I’d say John Cassavetes, one of those American underground auteurs, who works against the cliche Hollywood.

And I really want to say this: That “ENFP thing” is actually INFP thing. INFPs usually have unhealthy obsession with Disney, animation, or cartoon. Having too much INFP online pals, which is why I say this as an INTP. David Lynch and Federico Fellini films could satisfy XNFPs though.
Better ENFP films, I’d say Cassavetes (Love Streams), Frank Perry (David and Lisa), Hal Ashby (Harold and Maude).
Still, for most NT and NF users, anything unusual, uncommon, strange will interest them. Not something “average”, you know.

INFJ here. I prefer movies depending on my current mood (and my mood depends on my surroundings and current life season). But recently (3 years or so), I am trying to avoid “over-emotional sugar coating” movies, because I can enjoy the emotions everywhere I meet people. I like horrors and actions to feel some adventure, but it makes me a little scared too.

For me, I like movies or there are a lot of actions, adventures. Indianas jones style, tomb raider. Air Bagnards.
I also like movies or martial arts, it inspires me a lot.
I also like movies that have suspense, a good triller.
Sometimes some dramatic films that have real facts appeal to me like North Country or Changeling.

Eh… I’m INFP and my favorite genre is horror (anything zombies, slashers, and forensic documentaries), sci-fi (anything outer space, aliens, and science documentaries), and comedy (all kinds of comedy, from classy stand ups to shit joke movies). I do watch LoTR, SW, and HP countless times, but that’s all.
My ex husband is ISTP and he ABHORS horror movies. He actually loves fantasy, action/colossal/war, and sci-fi. My dad is INTJ and he doesn’t watch movies, he loves news and MTV. My mom is ESTJ and she loves telenovelas/Indian soap operas (drama/romance). My two best friends are ESFJ and their favorite genre is superhero, animation, and drama/religious movies! LoL. Everyone is different because everyone is unique…
INFP here. I agree that I love fantasy, but also sci fi, thriller, horror, adventure and criminal films (especially about puzzling investigations, Twin Peaks was my favourite tv-show), drama and history films. social satire, dark humour, survival films. I can identify myself as highly sensitive person who Is also a high sensation seeker, so I love being thrilled and to watch/do something that gives me an adrenaline rush.
INTP here. Nice post. Personally, I like all kinds of movies with drama being the least favourite since they make me feel uncomfortable and holding in my emotions is difficult when the drama of a drama movie is well executed and believable. Makes my head spin and put me out of balance. Second least favourite is comedy, it is just dull to me, except Borat; Borat is pure genius.
I cycle through different phases of movie genres, sometimes I can be for a month into sci-fi and fantasy and then the next month be tired of it and watch mystery movies all the time.
My most favourite movies are engaging movies where I can think about the things happening and when they make logical sense in my head without inconsistencies shown in the movies. I like to engage with the movie when I watch.
In fact, not just movies. Books, anime, manga, cartoons, tv-shows any story that is extremely engaging like Liar Game, Death Note, Inception, Interstellar and so on
Also, I am a fan of Limitless and I would want to be like the protagonist, I heard many INTPs share this sentiment.
I’m an ISTP and I hate horror movies and prefer nature documentaries. (I’m also a type 5 on the Enneagram, so I’m sure THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE!) I also prefer comedies to dramas.
