Which MBTI type are the factions from the Divergent Trilogy? Which MBTI type are the characters from the Divergent Trilogy?

There are five factions in Divergent. Firstly, Abnegation focuses on selflessness. The Abnegation faction has been described as quiet, as not to draw attention to themselves which is considered selfless, they have been described as dutiful as they have concerns for other people and concerned about the feelings of others. From this information, the quiet introverted types who do not draw as much attention to themselves. Looking into the SJ temperament, which is considered the Guardian temperament, SJ’s value social roles and duties in communities. Therefore, it can be concluded that an ISXJ, or Si type that more values tradition and routine orientated. Related to the Fe function, Abnegation values harmony and empathy for other people, often without as much concern for oneself as others. This makes Abengation most likely to be an ISFJ.

Secondly, Dauntless focuses on bravery. I have written about which MBTI type is most brave here, in which I described why ESTP’s are generally bravest. Most extroverts are energized by the many new and exciting situations that they, as action-orientated individuals, find themselves in. Therefore, most extroverts are more confident in facing new and potentially dangerous situations than introverts. Sensors live more in the present world than intuitives. They are more realistic individuals, and therefore, whilst intuitives are more likely to see all the potential situations that could occur from making a decision, such as saving a man who is being robbed, the sensors more likely focus on the present situation rather than future implications. Therefore, sensors are generally more brave. This also relates to judging vs perceiving. Perceiving types, particular Se, focus on the present moment, not considering the future implications as much. Without as much care about such things, Se types are generally more brave than Ni. Finally, whilst feeling types are more emotional and often irrational than thinkers, thinking types can generally rationalize situations better and think more with their heads. Therefore, ESTP types are most likely to be Dauntless.

The third faction is Erudite. The Erudite type values knowledge. Specifically, traits of Erudite include creativity, analytical skills, desire for information, and logic in all situations. Without a doubt, introverts are more likely to be Erudite, as they get information from ideas and from spending time alone gathering their thoughts, which are typical traits of an Erudite. Secondly, creativity, desire for information, analytical skills and logic in all situations combine for a Ti-Ne type, as evident by the logic and desire for information for Ti, and the creativity and analytical skills of an Ne user. Therefore, INTP’s are most likely to be Erudite.

The next faction is Candor, which values honesty. The Candor faction has been described as seeing only black and white, concerns with facts and valuing concrete information. This means that their primary function is likely Te, which values truth, facts and is often black and white in thinking style, whilst their secondary function, which is less obvious, is Si due to their value for concrete information and law and order in society. Therefore, Candor types are most likely to be ESTJ.

Finally, the Amity faction values kindness. Traits of an Amity include concern for others, peace, interest in art and a conflict free society. These traits scream introverted feeling, with most Amity members being highly interested in art and showing concern for others, which are traits of an Fi. This is backed up by the Se function, which is evident in Amity types due to their values of relaxation and peace, as well as their flexibility in trying to compromise with other people, if conflicts arise. In conclusion, the ESFP type highly values a conflict free society, showing that the Amity faction is ESFP.

  1. Amazing how great minds think alike. I wrote about this same topic a few weeks ago on my blog site at CustomerSecrets (http://customersecrets.com/divergent-book-shows-us-personality-conflicts/).

I agree with you assessment of the characters. My perspective was that I looked at the conflicts in the book between the personality types, and how people outside of personality research view other people. Since Veronica Roth, the author of the book is a self-described Dauntless (a SP type), we get to see how she and other SP’s view us. That is pretty interesting just by itself.

Interesting 🙂 I’m going to check that article out!

Actually, I found something pretty funny on her blogspot page:
      “3. Division Into Groups

I have a thing for groups, and I always have. It interests me in speculative fiction, whether it’s the houses at Hogwarts or the armies in Ender’s Game or the houses in Kushiel’s Dart (which I didn’t read all of, because it made me blush too much, but the house thing kept me going for awhile). I also have a long-time (now abandoned) obsession with personality tests, especially the Meyers-Briggs personality tests (depending on the day I’m an INFJ, INFP, or an ISFJ. I’ve forgotten what all those mean, though), and the enneagram (I’m a number 1: The Perfectionist. Now that one never changes. Ha). And I’ve always been interested in government systems that stick people in classes or castes (even if I’m also pretty horrified by them), or high school cliques, as depicted so well in Mean Girls:

So: groups. It was bound to happen.”Source
So she’s apparently an INFJ/INFP/ISFJ, even though she definitely appears SPish based on her self-described dauntless, and based on the way she writes. Who knew… I personally feel like she might be an IXFP, sometimes SP sometimes NP, but who knows!

  2. Charity says:

Yup. I’m reading the second book right now and thought, “I’d be in Erudite!” I’m not sure about Tris — she’s either an ISTP or an ISFP. It’s hard to tell with her, since she’s so emotional all the time yet so cold sometimes. Don’t know about Four, either.

    • tatl33 says:

I completely agree with Tris- I thought I would type her as ISFP at first, because she’s even thinking about her internal feelings in emergency situations- like running away from someone with a gun, she may be thinking about Four and how she feels about him. I also see her as ISTP- she’s brutally honest a lot, she gets to the point, and you could argue her Fi is coming out just under stress. Yeah, Four is definitely hard to type!

      • Charity says:

An ISFP can be really practical too – that’s their Se feeding them information and their Ni figuring out what to do with it. I read… five more chapters last night in Book 2? Still leaning on ISFP for Tris — for some reason, it just seems right. Tris didn’t really pick that faction for any other reason than her own emotions — I’m not good enough for the one I’m in, and I want to escape. “I” = Fi. Four is either an INTJ or an ISTP. He’s way more rational than Tris and somewhat controlling, so that could lean INTJ.

(No offense, INTJs that read this blog… P’s are just more laid back than you are, but we also don’t get as much done. So there’s a pro and a con. LOL)

        • tatl33 says:

I agree I could see Tris just as much as an ISFP as an ISTP. Her actions often indicate that she is an ISTP, but than her internal monologues, and occasionally some actions such as picking her faction, indicate Fi. It’s tough to say, and it really reminds me of the N/S debate on Katniss in the Hunger Games blog

          • Charity says:

Since stress kicks in our lesser functions, I think Tris and Katniss are both ISFPs in crappy situations, who are falling back on their Te to get things done. If their lives didn’t suck, they’d be different people.

I’m reading the second Divergent book and Tris certainly comes across as Fi. I use Fe as my fourth function and basically don’t agree with any of her moral decisions yet. =P

          • tatl33 says:

Interesting because Fe is my second function and I also disagree with a lot of her moral decisions! So I can certainly see it that she may be an Fi.
And I definitely see a lot of similarities in the internal monologue of both Tris and Katniss, so I could see them both as the same type- I typed ISTP but ISFP could be just as likely.

  3. Petey Putz says:

I thought that Tris would be more of an ENTP, due to her sharp wit and ability to handle abstract unrealistic situations. She uses a lot of Ne, or at least what I saw as Ne, since she can usually connect certain situations with deeper meanings and connotations. She may be action-oriented, but she isn’t like an SP. She thinks in more of an NT way, and goes about her actions almost as if to test her body AND mind. Of course, this is just my interpretation. Some people also say INTP, which doesn’t make much sense to me.

    • tatl33 says:

Yeah, I definitely don’t see any I in her. Often people associate the fact that the book is in 1st person with introversion, when in this case it’s certainly not true.
I like what your saying about ENTP- I think it could be highly possible that she is an ENTP. There are a few things that make be pause before saying that though:
1- Dauntless seems very Seish, because they love getting into new dangerous situations for fun and to face fears- rather than Ne who would usually do things for more of a purpose.
2- Although I agree with you that she connects certain situations with deeper meanings, I think this may be her Ni speaking, and I notice she often does this after she’s made an impulsive Seish decision (like getting captured by Erudite in book 1).
Other than those 2 reasons, I can see what you are saying. What do you think? Feel free to prove me wrong, I enjoy a good debate 😛

      • Petey Putz says:

I read the first and second book about two months ago and am now just starting the first one, so if any of my facts about the book are wrong feel free to correct me.
Tris seems to have a lot of SP qualities within her, that could probably be seen as NT like qualities as well. Granted Dauntless is more of an SP faction, she is divergent, so she doesn’t really “fit” like everyone else. It seems like she does things on impulse, but a lot of times they’re more than that.
“ENTPs are frequently described as clever, cerebrally and verbally quick, enthusiastic, outgoing, innovative, flexible, loyal, and resourceful.” These are all characteristics that I saw within her in the book, sharp tongue and wit, loyal to friends (except when they screw her over), etc. She has the ability to act in the moment based on the specifics, but she always takes time to consider the actual surroundings.
Although, after looking at the cognitive functions for both ISFP and ENTP, it seems like it somewhat of a tie for me.
Having Se would also explain the ability to act within the moment, but it doesn’t explain the strategy. The only issue I seem to find is the emotion. I do think she keeps her emotions within her, since she cannot and does not communicate her feelings a lot to other people. However, I don’t think she is so emotional that her dominant function is Fi.
In the end, the way she’s written, she could be many different types. Either way, whether ISFP (because she nowhere near ISTP) or ENTP, she’s most likely a more DEVELOPED person of that type. So either her emotion is well developed, but still confusing and hidden, or her logic is well developed, but still has fallacies.

I really ended up being on the fence about this but that’s what happens when you choose a divergent to analyze, huh?

        • tatl33 says:

In regards to your last paragraph: Yeah true! In my opinion, she’s definitely as hard as Katniss from the Hunger Games to analyse, if not more so!
I definitely can see where you are coming from with the ENTP. She is definitely very good at adapting to all these situations with resourcefulness and enthusiasm.
Looking back on it, I definitely don’t think she was an ISFP. The one thing that makes me feel otherwise is her irrational behaviour based on emotions rather than logic (which us F’s sometimes do) such as everything she does for Tobias even if its not the best for her.I would say her logic is well developed with fallacies is more likely, but that’s just my point of view.
What’s your typing for Katniss from the Hugner Games by the way? I’m interested in your opinion on it 🙂

    >people actually care about this movie

    • tatl33 says:

I was basing it off the book series. Although the movie is alright as well! It probably did as good as the 1st Hunger Games book in its adaptation from book to screen.

I don’t think INTP’s would really be content with being Erudite I think they would most likely be Divergent actually because they HATE strict rules and regulations which is all the Factions are. I think INTJ is much more likely to be more solidly Erudite.

    • Katie says:

I agree. As an INTP myself, I have always wondered what I would actually do if I was in the world of Divergent, and have thought that I would rather be factionless than join a faction, because the factionless at least get to be free in what they do and don’t have to follow so many different rules that tell you how you should live your life.

      • INTJprincess says:

Hi. I’m an Intj. I actually hate rules as much as ( if not more than) intps. I can’t stand it when someone tries to control me in any way. I think this goes for all intjs as well. Therefore I do not believe the above contradiction is correct. Thank you.

  6. TisIAnon says:

I think INTJs being in Erudite is fairly obvious. However, the logic and reasoning Erudite seemed to have in general was flawed and their way of becomming the governing faction was stupid. Plain stupid. I don’t see how any INTJ would have allowed what happened to happen since it wasn’t a very efficient way of doing things and had a little too many downsides to it. Basically they were too fucking dumb to be the “clever” faction. I disagree with Jeanine being INTJ she was far too deluded by her ideals and I’m sure somewhat feelings, an INTJ would know better. – This is my opinion based on the film not the books.

  7. Laura says:

    Amity: ExFP
    Erudite: INTx
    Candor: ??????
    Dauntless: ESTP
    Abnegation: ISFJ

  8. hannasdfjkl says:

As an INTP, I agree that we would be divergent. We hate rules and being told what to do. Also, we wouldn’t be Erudite because we are more inclined to theories than facts.

    • hannasdfjkl says:

Actually, thinking about it, we might just be factionless. :p

      • Katie says:

I am also an INTP, and feel the same way about the whole faction system. I would actually rather be factionless, as I wouldn’t have to follow so many rules.

  9. Liss says:

INFJ here, I would most likely be abnegation because of my desire to help others. I would be especially interested in improving conditions for the factionless communities 😉

  10. Anonymous says:

Why do you say that Four is an INTJ? I can’t pin down any Ni in him.
