Which MBTI type is the best video gamer?

Which MBTI type is the best at video games? It is an interesting question! Let’s get to it.

If this question was asked twenty years ago, introverts would win by far. However, in the modern world, games are often designed for online use. So, which type wins?

Still the introverted type. Whilst extroverts may have the advantage of a desire to play online and interact with other people more than introverts, introverts have the advantage of dedication to one thing- they do not get distracted by their outside environments, making them not only better at single player games, but often… multiplayer games too.

Intuitive types also succeed at video games, due to their ability to recognize patterns in the video game and exploit them. The experts know how the game works, know how their opponents work, figure out patterns in the environment, and exploit them to their advantage. Sounds very intuitive to me. Extroverted intuition is extremely helpful. For example, many strategies can be figured out in fighting games such as Tekken and by finding the right combinations to use on the opponent, you are guaranteed to win.

You’ll find a lot of video game players are thinkers. Thinkers are problem orientated- they enjoy solving problems. In Call of Duty, figuring out a way to defeat a team. In Skyrim, figuring out the required method to defeat an enemy- logically. Keep in mind, many games have been designed for feeling types- Sims, for example, is more about the social interactions, as is half of the video game Fable, in which you not only must defeat enemies but also take care of your city reputation. All in all though, thinking rules most video games.

Finally, perceivers are the experts at video games. They live in the moment, and will keep finding new ways to adjust their strategies, a crucial element to video games. For example, in Mario Kart, most people focus on practicing their turns and perfecting them. A perceiver, combined with intuition (extroverted intuition) would be likely to try new things, such as using a bullet item at the very end and boosting past everybody else.

All in all, it is clear that the INTP exceeds in the video game world. You don’t just need alone time to practice- you need to recognize patterns and logically apply them like an INTP does to succeed in the video game world. INTP’s rule in this aspect.

Really depends on the types of games. 9 times outta 10 i’ve seen ISTP’s coming out on top in a multiplayer shooter or fighting game.

Dislike video games (except the puzzle genres)

  3. Jamie says:

I agree, i think INTP’s and ISTP’s would be the best at videogames by far!

Depends what type of video game though.

Yes, I’m INTP and I definitely agree. I think I have an advantage with seeing the world the way I do, not that I’m smarter but I’m super dedicated to discovering the underlying principles of how things work and once you do that exceeding/winning is a piece of cake.

As an INTJ, I wondered if my type was generally good for gaming. My train of thought was based on the stereotype “nerds/geeks” (commonly of intellectual [_NT_] types, and introverts [thus INT_]) commonly play video games. I acknowledge and accept my “humble” defeat as perhaps possessing the 2nd best type for gaming😉

INTP and although I like video games, I don’t think INTPs would actually be the best at them as it takes a lot of practice to get good at a game and INTPs don’t have that patience, preferring to switch between games. So while we’d be better than average in many games, we wouldn’t come out on top in any single game. Of course, there are exceptions.

I agree. I’m a INTP and I’m very competitive when it comes to video games. But I can only get to a certain amount of skill. Then I get bored and switch to a different game once my skill starts to decline.
