Which MBTI type is most common for athletes?

Athlete: “A person trained to compete in sports.”

Well, which type is always focused on their surroundings, doing rather than thinking and thinking spontaneously? The answer is simple. ESTP.

Almost everybody who is involved in sport switches to “ESTP mode” whilst playing sport. They must be extroverted to notice their surroundings, and focus on what is happening externally rather than internally.

They must be sensors, thinking simply about what to do next. They must stick to the rules and focus on the common techniques used. They rely on their common instincts rather than intuition, which makes up for a great sport player.

As well as this, athletes must be thinkers. It doesn’t help if you get offended because your friend didn’t pass you the soccer ball or you throw the worst shooter on the team the basketball because he was always getting left out. You need to think logically to succeed. You can’t think about how it will affect others (unless you’ve punched someone over and beat the crap out of them just because they got the ball.)

Federer is a strong perceiver.

Off court Federer is an INTP, on court he is an ESTP.

This part may surprise you. Perceivers are in fact better athletes than judgers. Whilst judgers consistently and efficiently train their hardest, perceivers live in the moment and make decisions quickly. They can change their whole game style and can adapt quickly to a new challenge that arises them. These skills are essential in sports. Therefore, perceivers are the best as athletes.

From this information, it is clear that the sports stars that we see on TV and in the newspaper are ESTP’s, due to the fact that their first cognitive function is Se (extroverted sensing,) meaning that they spent most of their time observing their external surroundings.
